More and Less. Forward or Back.
Well, here we are. 2024. Huzzah 🎉!
I hope it’s a really great year for you and for yours. May there be the perfect mix of contentment and restlessness.
So, how do you gird your loins for the … please stand by while Michael does some basic math … 357 days that remain?
I do like the “one word for the year” (Dr Jason Fox taught me this) … although it does seem that this year EVERYONE is banging on about that. It gives the year a singular theme, like a motivational version of Pantone’s colour of the year (you could use “Peach Fuzz” for both, I guess?).
I also like the “three words for the year” (Chris Brogan taught me this). It sets up three standards or principles by which you make decisions. Complex systems often get managed by three simple principles (including boids and murmurations), so this can be an unexpectedly sophisticated tool.
But wait, there’s more
If you’re looking for more than words, I’ve got something that might be helpful.
It’s simple, but I think “simple on the other side of complexity”. It helps you remember the big picture, but also orient in the moment.
You can download it directly here (no email or anything required).
Step 1. (Simple but difficult): Name something you want more of, and something you want less of this year. It’s good to add, and it’s often really good to take away.
Step 2. (Simple and easy): Stick this somewhere you’ll see it regularly.
Step 3. (Simple and easy): When you’re doing something, anything really, check in to see if this is moving you closer to or further away from what you want.
Huzzah!
